St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the leading acute Trusts in the North West of England. We provide a full range of acute adult services to our local population of circa 350,000 and provide tertiary services across a much wider area in the North West, North Wales and Isle of Man. We are a Major Trauma Unit and the Mersey Regional Burns Unit.

Seddon Specialist Rehabilitation Spoke Unit at St Helens Hospital is part of the Cheshire and Merseyside Rehabilitation Network. This 20 bedded unit provides specialist rehabilitation input to adults of all ages with complex rehabilitation needs including patients who have suffered brain injury, polytrauma, neurological illness and those who have had prolonged stays in a critical care setting. The unit uses a multidisciplinary approach including Doctors, Physiotherapy, OT, Psychology, Nursing, SLT, Neuropsychiatry, Dietetics, and Vocational rehabilitation to help patients to optimise functional abilities, independence and quality of life. The team has close links with acute specialties locally, at The Walton Centre and at Aintree Major Trauma Unit and with Community Rehabilitation Teams.
The unit provides doctors with the opportunity to gain insight and understanding into the rehabilitation process, medical and surgical conditions resulting in impairment and the opportunity to work within an effective multidisciplinary team
The postholder will work alongside a Rehabilitation Consultant and Registrar and will be an important member of the rehabilitation team. They will provide day to day medical input to the 20 ward patients, liaising with a variety of specialties as required. They will also manage acute illness, initiating treatment and escalating care as required. Responsibilities will include close working with medical nursing and therapy staff to ensure patients health needs are met, assessment of patients newly admitted to the ward and completion of discharge documentation. They will also work closely with patients and family / friends / carers to ensure they are kept informed of any medical and social issues during their stay.
Involvement in audit/research and attendance at teaching/educational courses is encouraged.
There is opportunity to spend time advancing knowledge and skills in this speciality area or in others of interest to the postholder.
The postholder would be expected to have good communication skills, be competent in history taking, examination and prescribing with experience at or beyond FY2 level. The post would suit an individual who is motivated, organised and a team player. Prior experience in rehabilitation is not required and can be gained within the post.
