Department of medicine for older people
Fixed term 12 months
£37,923 - £70,718 per annum
St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the leading acute Trusts in the North West of England. We provide a full range of acute adult services to our local population of circa 350,000 and provide tertiary services across a much wider area in the North West, North Wales and Isle of Man. We are a Major Trauma Unit and the Mersey Regional Burns Unit.
Our '5 Star Patient Care' strategy is at the heart of all that we do; supporting our vision to provide world class services for all our patients by getting it right for every patient, every time.
This is an exciting opportunity for a Stroke Specialty Doctor to join a rapidly developing and friendly Department of Medicine for Older People.
The Department is a closely knit group of 8 Consultants specialising in Stroke Medicine. The primary purpose of this role is to provide ST3+ cover for the Stroke Unit which is split into a Hyper-Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) and a Rehabilitation Unit comprising of 16 and 23 beds respectively. There is a superb multi-disciplinary environment and the successful candidate will be working alongside a team of Training Grade Doctors. The successful candidate will also be involved in rapid-access TIA clinics and thrombolysis for stroke. There is a daily Consultant ward round in HASU and two Consultant-led ward rounds; plus 2 Consultant-led MDTs in the Rehabilitation Unit offering much needed senior support. There will be an opportunity for the successful candidate to receive formal training in hyper-acute care for stroke and participate in general medical on-calls.
The job is for 10 sessions (pending Job Plan review at 3 months). The post does not include any on-call commitments but this can be negotiated with the successful candidate. The previous specialty doctors in the trust have either passed their higher exams to go on to become specialist trainees or consultants through alternative career pathway.
The successful candidate would be expected to demonstrate excellent, organisational and time-management skills. Have the ability to work as part of a team, have good interpersonal skills and demonstrate a caring attitude towards patients.
The successful candidate will also have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrate resilience during times of pressure, but also to seek timely assistance from senior colleagues when appropriate.
